Buttrio is a member of the National Association of Wine Cities, and numerous promotional activities in this sector are currently being carried out, rooted in its history and tradition in the wine industry.

Indeed, thanks to the presence of hills, a favorable microclimate, and ideal soils (the “ponca,” a combination of marl and sandstone), the town has always been inclined towards quality wine production.

A testament to the excellence of winemaking is the renowned Regional Wine Fair of Buttrio, which reached its 90th edition in 2023. This wine event, one of the oldest in Italy, was awarded the prestigious "Sagra di Qualità" (Quality Festival) label in 2020, a national recognition established by the National Union of Proloco Associations of Italy, in appreciation of its significant contribution to the promotion and protection of the territory.

The municipal territory is included inthree Denominations of Controlled Origin (DOC): the hilly portion refers to the “Colli Orientali del Friuli” DOC, while the flat part is part of the “Grave del Friuli” DOC, and it’s also within the “Prosecco” DOC. Additionally, there is the “Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit” DOCG, and the IGT “Venezia Giulia” and “delle Venezie” IGTs. Buttrio is also a member of the national “Città del Vino” (Wine Cities) Association.

The wines produced here reach their highest quality in white varieties (Ribolla Gialla, Friulano, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon) as well as in excellent reds (Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Pinot Nero).

Currently, over 20 specialized wineries operate in the area, using modern techniques for wine production (www.buri.it/cantine/).
